Heart of a Dragon
The Tale of Wyrvern

By C. Jensen

“Wake up, Wyrvern, breakfast time,” A voice called out. Wyrvern who was still asleep jumped from his bed. “Ok, Grandma, be there in a minute,” Wyrvern shouted back out of his room. He was visiting his grandmother in Bastok, his homeland. He yawned and sat at the table. His platinum blonde Hume grandmother turns to him. “Now Wyrvern, did you wash up?” Wyrvern scoffed and went to wash his hands. He looked in the mirror and seen his hair was a little messed up and he brushed water to spike the front of his brown hair. He went back to the table and sat down with his grandma to breakfast. She looked at him and smiled. “I’m glade that you took time off of you adventuring to visit little old me,” his grandma said. “Well, I was around here for my last job so I came to stop by,” He said smiling. They began eating their meal. “So what happen to those two Elvaans you are always around,” She said. “What were their names again?” Wyrvern chuckled. “Coragin and Eclypso, they’re ok. Coragin needed to go to Norg for a while and Eclypso, I really don’t know, he is always just wondering places,” Wyrvern said. She smiled, “You seem to be a lot stronger since you met that Coragin boy, you look like you had been fighting a lot,” She said. He grinned at the comment; thoughts going through his head about Coragin helping him fight better, and stay focus mentally. “Yeah, Granny, he keeps me on my toes,” Wyrvern said. “Glade you have good friends, it a shame you moved to San d’Oria, I think now you could be a great Iron Musketeer as your grandfather was,” Wyrvern’s grandmother said. “How I miss him.” Wyrvern looked up at the picture of his grandfather. Wyrvern remember always wanted to be like his grandfather, but could never pass the Iron Musketeer entry test. “Granny, do you think he be proud of me now?” Wyrvern asked softly. He went to touch the picture of his late grandfather. His grandmother touched his shoulder. “I believe he would say that you met his expectations ten fold,” She told him. He looked at the clock. “Well granny, it was great seeing you, thank you for breakfast but I need to head back to Jeuno,” Wyrvern turn to kissed his grandmother on the cheek. “Wait, one more thing, you do need to feed Rygor,” His grandmother said handing him a slab of raw meat. Wyrvern bowed, “I promise, next time I’m in town I’ll visit again.” He said running out the door.

After shutting the door, Wyrvern whistled loudly. A blue dragon, no bigger than a good-sized house cat, flew down from a tree next to his grandmother’s house. “Good boy, Rygor, here breakfast for ya,” Wyrvern said to the young dragon. Wyrvern was a dragoon, an ancient order of knights known for having “Pacts” with dragon and masters of spear combat. Wyrvern pet Rygor gently behind his ear and the dragon growled in delight to see his master. “You ready to go back to Jeuno, boy?” Wyrvern said to the dragon. As Rygor finished his food, it perched on Wyrvern’s shoulder.

As Wyrvern went to the city gates to head out he heard a familiar voice. “Wyrvern!” the voice was shouting. Wyrvern turn to see his Elvaan friend, Usahana. She was running toward him at full speed. She stopped and took a breath, while Wyrvern looked confused. “I’m glad I caught up to you, I need your help,” Usahana gasping for air. She got up and brushed back her black hair. Wyrvern looked up at her; he felt short standing next to her for she was about 6’4” when he was about 5’11”, for Humes are not known for there height. “What do you need?” Wyrvern asked. She started to look at the floor in embarrassment. “Well I was in Oldton Movalpolos and I dropped a valuable ring there. A Goblin picked it up and will not give it back to me. The ring is very important to me and he is trying to charge me 30,000 Gil for it,” She said. She stamped her foot in anger. Wyrvern laughed. “Are you asking for some muscle?” he asked. She nodded. Wyrvern put up his fist. “Well, let’s go muscle your ring back!”

Wyrvern and Usahana walked out to Gustaburg, a mountain region outside Bastok. Wyrvern looked at the Elvaan paladin to see she looked upset. “So what was up with this ring? Has to be really important for you to get this upset about it,” Wyrvern asked. Usahana chuckled. “It was a gift from Coragin, along time ago. Back when we were still in school.” She said. Wow, that must have been a log time ago that happen. Wyrvern thought to himself. “Didn’t know that you two went to school with each other,” Wyrvern said. “Back when we were kids, yeah.” She replied. “We dated in high school for a little bit.” They walked up to the cave that led in to Oldton Movalpolos. “Here we are Usahana, lead the way,” Wyrvern said bowing to lead Usahana into the cave.

The moblin village looked less like a bustling town and more like an old mineshaft. The goblins have dug down the crust of Vana’diel mining precious metals such as gold, silver, and platinum. The goblins did not pay attention to the visitors they had from the outside world. The Moblins where walking very busy with gems. Usahana marched ahead with a flustered mumble in her voice. “Usa, slow down a bit,” Wyrvern shouted struggling to keep up. She stopped and crossed her arms, “We need to hurry to get my ring back.” Wyrvern sighed and started almost going into a run to catch up. “You think after hanging out with Elvaans for so long I learn to keep up with one of them.” Usahana shouted back to him. “Yeah surprises me, too.”
