odinmovingAfter a recent attempt to move people from the Odin server, Square Enix has come out today and announced that in spite of their attempts to offer free transfers to other servers, that Odin is still over populated. Because of this they will be offering world emigration again. While that is all fine and dandy, there is one part of this recent post that upsets players.

In case the emigration campaign and the above measures have no effect on the congestion of the Odin world, measures such as forced transfers to other worlds or splitting the Odin world into a number of separate worlds may be considered.

Would this be the smartest thing for SE to do? One popular forum has players posting and saying things similar to:

After all the stupid things SE has done, this would make me quit.

Surely there has to be a better way to deal with this than randomly distributing people from the server to others. Friendships would be broken, linkshells would be destroyed. More importantly though for Square Enix: They would lose subscribers.

Everyone at Odin should say to all their friends, that you are moving in 10 days, to, for example Phoenix.

All your friends should say the same to thier friends, etc. etc.

Shout it in whitegate, jeuno, norg, den of rancor idc, wherever and I would like to know what will happen.

  2. Napkin says:

yeah like my social ls, we arnt big like 10 members but we started seriously think about use this free emigration even if the server we wanna go to isnt on the list.. but if anyone of us would be forcemoved we’d cry lol

  3. Snowshadow (Carbuncle) says:

I agree with everyone here that SE has given the people on Odin plenty of chances to move. However, how many of you are in that situation? Let’s just say that your server was overcrowded.
SE asks you to move. Well, you want to help SE out, right? However, do you want to “start from scratch” (quotes because you would still have all your levels and things), get a new LS, find new friends, etc? The game won’t be the same without them there… right?

I don’t think people would mind switiching from a server that is overpopulated. However, I think what they do mind is leaving all the friends and people who have helped them over the years. I’m not on the server so I don’t know, but calling people “pigheads” and insulting them for not wanting to leave seems unfair to me. They just don’t want to break the bonds that they have with their friends in the game.

I don’t blame SE for having to force move people though. People are going to get upset, but in the long run it will be a lot better for the server. =)

  4. Taiken says:

    BUY NEW SERVER HARDWARE!!!!1one

That at least doesn’t have the b*llshit excuse for “PS2 compatibility”

  5. Fantone says:

I’d love to hear this as a roundtable w/ LBR.

  6. Yoruichii (Odin) says:

… =.=;; wow “i blame lbr” seems to be the scapegoat here, personally i blame the fact odins economy used to be awesome. now its retarded

  7. Vaii says:

I can see it now… S-E moves everyone’s mules to Fairy.
Even worse, split the server; mules on one side, mains on the other.

I’m not on Odin, but if I was I wouldn’t move and I’d be pissed if they forced me.
    Especially if they just moved my mule -_-;;

  8. Yoruichii(Odin) says:

thats the attitude of pretty much all of odin. which is sad because its gonna force se to take action. and losing your mules would be a supreme kick to the… “Chocoballs”

  9. Katiekat says:

ok ferst off i sapreamly dout they are going to split up aconts like send chars on the same acount to difrint servers. next this seams kinda well…kide like i mean se is going to do what they do and you can take it like adolts and deal with it daspite not likeing it or you can wine and bitch and mone bc Se did what they felt was rite but your bitching and moaning is not going to make them stop weather it was bc of L.B.R. or odin just being the “in place” your to big so face it they will make you move and thers not much you can do to stop it so i think at this point your going to have to just take it or quit bc wining is just going to salve nothing and yes i now i am not from the server but you know what i moved from ifrit and thers this wonderthing called vent and team speak and omg the inter net for keaping in tuch with friends

  10. Yoruichii (Odin) says:

Well the return home to vanadiel thing is gonna be interesting, im planning to bring back my hume rdm, i wonder if ill get the chance to move her

  11. Angeladark says:

As for my two cents… SE has come out and said from the very beginning that they would take matters into their own hands when it comes to over and underpopulation… We have already seen servers close because of underpopulation. And as mentioned before they have given everyone a change to move servers… Besides, there are a number of resources available to everyone to help them from “starting from scratch” with life on a new server, perhaps you find that some of your friends from Odin also moved, so you all can find or form a linkshell together… I’m finding that this is becoming typical of the FFXI community, blaming SE for when things go wrong, then blaming them more for taking measures to correct things like this. Fact is, people have had their chance, now SE is taking matters into their own hands…. Besides, if your character does move, then you can move back in 90 days by paying the fee, it’s not like you’ll be stuck on that server. Oh, and as for “mains on one server, mules on another” that won’t happen, since most likely they’ll move entire accounts that’s on the Odin server rather than partial accounts…

  12. Tratrix says:

SE didnt give them a chance they offerend a dead suck server to move to , there was only 5 servers offerend and i dont think u would like to cut ur fun in game and go to server u never been to or u never liked … if they want to give a chance then that would be to all servers. so i cant consider that they gave the players a chance it just sucks.

  13. shiroitsubasa says:

I was one of those ppl who took ‘advantage’ of the last Free Emigration (incidentally enuf) to Fairy. XD

I still have mules in Odin for chatting with my old friends, and from what I can gather, before I moved, a /sea all yield 5k+ people, today, i did a /sea all it is STILL about 5k+.

Lets face the facts, a server has a threshold, there is only so much a server can hold. And it’s not just about better hardware. It could just be software limitiations and the fact that it doesnt scale very well past a certain limit.

One of the biggest annoyance which made me leave was that nearly everytime i go to Whitegate I will get kick off the game (especially weekends). And can take up to 20-30 minutes before I can get on. That’s half an hour gone from my play time and that’s not very productive. And as mentioned, there’s not much change in the population even after the free transfer which goes to show that that tactic is not gonna work. So it is only fair for SE to take matters in their own hands to ensure that everyone can enjoy the game ‘as it was meant to be’.

While a force migration might sound harsh, it is the only step left since no one seems to move voluntarily *shrugs*.

  14. Arnor says:

As someone thats been on odin since i started this game i can say that if me or any of the close friends i deal with on a day to day basis on the game were to be taken off server against thier will i would choose not to play the game anymore and i know im not the only one that feels this way… SE created this problem when they reopened odin for people to come from other servers after they first announced that server was overcrowded and now they are gonna make people who have been here leave because of it? friendships and linkshells will suffer because SE allowed this problem to get this far.. in my eyes there is no easy answer to this.. but a force migration will do nothing but hurt the game for the people of odin.. not to mention the fact that once everyone is moved you take the chance of people moving to other servers to be with thier friends and possibly overcrowd anothe rserver.. i just hope SE understands how this action would affect the people who play this game before they do anything

  15. Miryoku (Odin) says:

I’m with Arnor on this one. I’ve been on Odin for almost 7 years now and I am aghast that SE would even think about splitting people up forcefully. Seven years people. Thats over a thousand dollars in monthly fees. And now they’re just gonna kick either me or my friends off because they made the mistake of opening the server? Its stupid. Its rediculous. What I want to know is why there is a recent (and I mean like just in the past few months) giant influx of Japanese players onto our server. People should not be allowed on when we already have enough people.

  16. Leey says:

agreed with Arnor (i know wtf) but SE made this bullshit problem and of course there “fix it” is bullshit too, only nice way to do it is keep offering free transfers and hope ppl take it anything else at this point even splitting odin would be very harsh and stupid and please no comments about the “right” thing to do if your not from odin leaving comments sure thats np but telling ppl how they should feel? your not even here gtfo.

could also limit ppl to 2-3 mules (you dont need more than that really but some ppl on odin have like 10 mules <.<) COULD ALSO REMOVE ALL THE RMT SE HOW ABOUT THAT?

  17. Shad says:

Being on on odin for the last 3 years I would like to provide the following observation. SE should have invested in birthcontrol for server odin along time before the over crowding took place. This didn’t take place in one month or two so dont expect the solution to take place in one or two. GIVE me a real incentive to move — GOLDEN ANNIVERSARY RING — something with 50 charges to it instead of the 10 normally I know of one instance where a person was allowed to return to odin after the November Migration was completed. What gives — I have to leave and then they allow people back on — now I’m suppose to leave — BULL — I have 4 full access accounts with 1 mule per account — so add it up SE — if you want a migration to WOW just say so and ill transfer way off any world you have. Do better management with the RMTs, the TeleBots and quit letting new people in odin after the migrations

  18. Salacia of Odin says:

I heard there was some famous Japanese person that plays on Odin, and so a lot of Japanese people moved there. Maybe that’s a rumor? >_>

I’ve been on Odin since NA PC release. Needless to say my friend list is… long. I don’t know about other people, but the main reason I still play this game after so many years is all of the wonderful people I’ve met. It just wouldnt be the same game without them.

The immigration is a fantastic idea in general, but honestly, who’s going to move after they’ve met a bunch of people, joined an enjoyable social shell, and has possibley participated in some endgame events for points they’d really rather not lose? The people that move will mostly be new people, often disliked persons, older players that have lost the majority of their friends, or someone with a small amount of friends and/or linkshells. …..That’s not going to be very many people.

I think the aforementioned moving gift would be brilliant, but it’d have to be something worthwhile. Afterall, people are most likely leaving a community they’ve gotten to know after some decent amount of gameplay. The least they deserve is a “thank you for moving” gift. =/

If they don’t make a gift they should move all of the newest players within the past few months, possibly years. Still not a great idea, but a little more logical compared to random evictions.

Or they could split the server into JP & EN/EU, or JP EN and EU. A lot of Japanese players on Odin prefer to play only with Japanese players at any rate.

I’m fairly sure it will inevitably come to pass, let’s just hope SE has the decency to respect the people that have been there before it was the popular place to go. -_-

(And while creating mules is already temporarily banned, limiting mules is a bad idea too. Some people play on the same account in the same household.)

  19. Elimari (Odin) says:

Ok.. a few months late! Odin.. still closed to new characters and world transfers!

Here is my opinion on things…
Ok, Mules, has anyone played on Odin recently? especially in Jeuno? the amount of Mules just standing around in upper jeuno is just crazy! it seems like 4 Mules per active character! I have another character in Pheonix, (I don’t plan on migrating over, nor deleting them to re-create on odin before anyone asks) – I created this char because I wanted to show my friends.. who I hope can get a transfer to Odin soon, what the game is like – with the free trial…

I go into the same area in pheonix and yes.. there are mules.. but less then half then what is on odin!

Now.. all these “mules” total up the population… so my 2 friends.. that actively want to play the game, like most others can’t get onto Odin, because… people rather have Mules!

Just running around Upper Jeuno (on a high end PC with a 50meg connection) I get tremendous lag, and it ticks me off.

I know this sounds very “Anti-mule”, I myself am very “Anti-mule” but if people want to use Mules just dont be greedy.. think about others! for each of your mules.. that is one less actual player in the game.

If SE offers another free world transfer soon, me, and the linkshell I am in.. are contemplating moving to a new server, Odin is getting stupid now anyway.. if they opened it up now.. all the new members will feel very isolated, there are just too many high levels.. and just the other week West Ronfaure had a tiny bit of Bastok influence! SE have kept the server closed too long, prices are sky high in Bazaars and AH’s, Dunes parties are almost non-existant.. only people there these days are people leveling up other jobs.. (when they already have 3 level 75′s).

Its a shame though.. coz I have made many.. many friends in Odin and I will hate to wave goodbye to it.. but it is just going down the pan!

I just hope they sort something out soon, and if they choose to force us off. I hope they do start with the Mules first, it is only fair on the active players.. Just imagine it..

You just done a opening part of a quest that waits for you to wait for Jap Midnight for the next part. so you say to your linkshell “see ya tomorrow then!”

Only to find… wait.. your all on different servers!
yet some of the Mules are still standing happily in Upper Jeuno, selling the same gear they been selling for the past 8 months.
