The announcement of the new head gear in “A Moogle Kupo d’Etat” sparked the memory of several community members with their interesting designs. Two of the newly announced armor pieces seem to have originally been part of a previous Final Fantasy game.

Both the Champion’s Galea and Selenian Cap can be seen in Final Fantasy III (which was also directed by FFXI Director Hiromichi Tanaka) as the armor worn by the “Knight” and “Magus” job classes. It has also been seen now that the Nuevo Coselete that was released in “A Crystalline Prophecy” also bares a striking resemblance to the armor of the “Knight” class.

Each character in Final Fantasy III had slight differences in their armor when compared to the other members with the same job selected. Even more interesting is that the pieces that have been selected to appear in Final Fantasy XI all seem to originate from the design of one particular character in FFIII: Refia.

It wasn’t until the new head pieces were compared with past Final Fantasy jobs that the similarities were seen between the Neuvo Coselete and the armor of the “Knight”. Between the two versions there are three large similarities.

The Galea

The pointed tip in the back, as well as the awkward curvature of the mask relates this new head piece to the Knights helm in Final Fantasy III.

The shield on the shoulder with a cross

While the design and coloring are different, the placement is indeed the same. The fact that it’s also a cross on the Coselete reinforces the idea that this was the armor from Refia as opposed to the other 3 characters in Final Fantasy III.

The cape

When the coselete was first announced, many people were excited to read that it had a “cape”. Of course, technically there are no visible capes in FFXI, so it was nice to see something that at least resembled a cape.

The second similarity found with the new head pieces lies with the Selenian Cap. Like the Galea, this cap also has an odd curvature to it which can be seen in its FFIII counterpart.

Side Square

On the side of the hat is a light blue band with a square design. In Final Fantasy III this particular object is what had been changed for each of the characters. The design they chose to use for FFXI closely resembles Refia’s hat.

vikingIt’s always great to see elements of previous Final Fantasy games make their way into the world of Final Fantasy XI. The artifact armor of the jobs in Vana’diel do pull from classic designs, however it’s great to see even more equipment to satisfy veteran players of the series. We know that there is currently a viking helmet in the data files that could make reference to the Viking job class in past games. With so many games in the series, there’s a lot of content that could be carried over for adventurers to enjoy in Vana’diel.

Well, Final Fantasy XI is governed by key members of the staff from Final Fantasy I ~ III, including the director of the remake. It flows both ways, actually, as Final Fantasy XI-like tactics can be employed in the DS remake of Final Fantasy III with concepts like “Tanks”.

The job-ability animation of the Viking job-classes “Provoke” is IDENTICAL to that of our Warrior’s. Also, I think Scholar’s one and only appearance is in Final Fantasy III? Aside from that, 3 marks the introduction a job system where characters changing back and forth is normal place.

Where we got classic Final Fantasy I, II, III in Final Fantasy XI; it leaves the mind to wander what Final Fantasy elements will Final Fantasy XIV draw from?

Wonderful! I was hoping some one would do a side by side. I also think the Royal Redingote has some design flair from the dark frock.

I read in one of JPButton’s articles about the Gigas that the shields they wore on their pants/belts were from the formidable opponents they defeated in the Northlands; the Vikings. So they do exist in the Vana’diel Lore! It might very well be a job in the future :)
