It's not even the fact that they are close to impossible to beat. It's the fact that it takes forever to just spawn the monster.

You also have to keep in mind, when discussing gear, making the hardest monster defeat-able by people with above average/good gear means that people with the best gear end up not having a challenge (kirin anyone?).

These monsters were made so that people could still have a challenge once they got to endgame. Not so that average Joe can get his buddies together and go beat up the strongest monster(s) in the game.

And to those complaining about drop rates, I think that low drop rates are perfectly acceptable. Otherwise, you come once and you're done. What I'd like to see is an extremely difficult monster that has a massive drop pool (30+ items) that help in all kinds of situations, and then is guaranteed to drop say 5, with a chance at dropping a few more. You'd keep coming back because it'd still be worth it for more drops.

I think it's toughness wouldn't be an issue if EVERY participant in the games hardest, possibly most expensive battles to fight, got the drops they were there for in the first place. Nothing is cool about wasting time, money, and effort only to lose 30 times, win on the 31st, and get nothing but a title that'll change when you do a new quest (that's considering by some freak chance you actually won). Sure, someone there got the uber bad-ass drop, but most of them just get to say they helped. But this can be said about end-game in it's entirety. Also, there should be quests related to such notorious monsters that end up giving you an idea of what weaknesses these NMs have. There is no reason SE should have to litterally give us useless hints through their site (AV video). I mean it helpped, but there should have been something in the game that gives you a hint. Goals are nice, but games are for having fun, man! and the battle system just isn't deep enough for that kinda BS :P FFXI: "it's not what you do to reduce or add damage, it's what you wear." basicly, skill takes a back seat and luck runs the show (lucky lot for a lucky drop on a lucky claim-- evasion is luck, acc is luck, dmg is luck, which can be lightly shifted based on gear/job + abilities, which are again enhanced by gear and ur lucky lots~) I for one hope XIV is alot more skill oriented.
sry for the rant haha! and the massive wall of words ; ;

As far as I am concerned, they need to let people know in advance how much it is going to take. When AV and PW came out they needed to say to players in some shape or form "This is the ultimate test and only extremely few people will be able to complete it."

 I understand putting something out there for people who have already completed the gear set up of dreams. They need something to do, despite the fact there aren't enough people per server per time zone to get together to actually accomplish this. Also gear doesn't mean skill it means persistence.

 Warn everyone else the months of time you are going to put into getting the requirements are useless unless you have achieved the best of the best gear by that point. Who wants to spend all this time fighting ZNM to take a shot at PW when you find out: you never had a chance?

Honestly, I'm sure I'm the only that feels this way but I am glad that there is a monster in the game. that (1). can't be beaten by conventional means and (2) would take a very long time even with the correct requirements. I would however like to see SE put in a "disclaimer" that could so how fit with the story. Maybe an NPC saying something like; "This is a beast of Epic strength and only extreme dedicated adventures dare...." well you know something like that. and instead of having weapons that only drop from these NM. let it be mog banaza type prizes

Including what everyone else has mentioned. the dev team doesn't seem to realize that most players don't care about fighting these types of mobs and won't even think of trying because the requirements are so absurd compared to the (potential) rewards.

If i were a PLD with Aegis and full on relic, etc. I wouldn't give two craps about anything that PW drops. I'de probably just do Campaign like I do now. By that logic, I probably won't ever bother to get Aegis, because all I do is campaign. :P

I wonder if these Devs actually play FFXI, and not just on their private test servers without things like competition, fluctuating economies, and the like. I'm sure it's easy to defeat if you can input some codes to get the best gear possible.

Getting 54 people with the absolute best gear in the game to spend 8 hours fighting one boss that they have a 1% change of getting a good drop from is completely realistic and great game design.
