  1. ???(?`???)? FFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUU @ the SCH nerf!

    RMT spam filters are off by default. Foul language filters are on, but spam filters are off.

    I literally cannot think of a way that this could be more wrong.

    In 2001, Windows XP was the first version of Windows rolled out with a built-in firewall. Because they didn’t want to confuse the poor users, Microsoft shipped XP with the firewall turned off by default. And Microsoft and the rest of the internet and the IT world have been dealing with the massive fallout, the huge botnets, created as a result of that decision for the rest for nearly a *decade*, with still no end in sight.

    The only people who will turn on these spam filters are the people that know such an option exists, let alone how to dig through three layers of menus to exercise it. These also happen to be the ones who readily know that buying gil is illegitimate, that the free mog bonanza marbles routine is a phishing scam, and that such things should be reported to the GMs (and how to report them).

    Having these filters turned off by default will leave Final Fantasy XI’s most precious resource, new players, the least defended. I would argue that they are now even worse off than they were before, because now the most egregious scams and attacks will be unknown to the GMs and staff.

    Security features that are turned off by default aren’t secure at all. Everybody that knows anything about computer security knows this. What rock has S-E been living under for the past ten or fifteen years for them to not realize how abysmally bad an idea this is? Whose nephew was hired to do IT security over there?

    I knew it was only a matter of time before SE took after the Modus Veritas thing. Don’t know why anyone is surprised about it.

    @ SMN update: I don’t see any mention of the “weakness” favor was mentioned to give avatars in the French and German preview notes.. I am mooost happy.

    However….

    No avatar? ‘course not. /sigh But honestly, I’m not surprised. Maybe in the later November update.

  4. Mr. Slick says:

    No Avatars sweet, please make sure you send your comments again…

  5. TimTaru says:

    {/sigh} When will SE stop reneging on their statements.

    Was really hoping we’d see the new Avatar(s) this update.
    I remember being so overjoyed, filled with hopeful anticipation at each new update… now there’s only disappointment. Nerf SCH and raincheck on SMN.

    When’s FFXIV comin’ out. I’m tired of this.

  6. Giacomo says:

    Hmm… No offense to SMNs here… but, don’t we have CORs for those abilities?

  7. Cacie says:

    adding avatar’s favor: good.
    removing the Hidden Effect from Carbuncle mitts: very very bad move!

  8. ZT says:

    An “opt-out” scheme is something I would expect to see offered by Brogame or Oosale themselves, not from Square-Enix. This is the kind of measure I would expect to see from a business knowingly profiting from allowing RMT spam.

    At this point, why shouldn’t players expect Final Fantasy XIV to be another hotbed of spam that players would be required to pay $12.95/mo for the privilege of receiving?

  9. Iamvictor says:

    Retracting the RNG emnity changes, kind of depressing. The BST changes turned out to be ok. However, SE found time to add a 75+ NM sea monk to south eastern Qufim Island “Atkorkamuy”. Travelers beware…

  10. Mr. Slick says:

    People wonder why no fan fest…well because they knew Avatars where not going to be done, they didn’t want a riot @ the fanfest, so now they get people QQ on websites blah blah.

    So annoying SE…so annoying.

  11. Sevokevo says:

    As they said at Fan Feast, by THIS TIME NExt year…. (December) YOu will be asking us how to use them.

    My Guessing that the Avatars will be out during the update of November.

  12. Phinn says:

    i can’t believe they shut down one of the most iconic pieces of old school mage gear ; ;

  13. Mr. Slick says:

    @Sevokevo, I was mistaken Fanfest was in December, well I do hope they come this year, be shitty as hell if they don’t. I’m guessing 23rd -24th!

  14. Sevokevo says:

    Carby Mitts are fixed now due to the Maintenance Today

  15. Sevokevo says:

    @Mr. Slick, Yup

  16. Sevokevo says:

    @Cacie, Not Anymore. :D
